JoMarie McKenzie has served on the Bighorn-Desert View Board since 2018. She moved from Los Angeles to Landers in 2013. Her interest in water was sparked by local discussions about Bighorn-Desert View Water Agency’s interest in annexing from San Bernardino County to provide water to the Landers area. She started to attend board meetings to learn more, sharing updates with her neighbors. She ran for an open seat on the Board and won the election.
JoMarie has enjoyed a successful career in retail and has worked for a number of Southern California retailers including Montgomery Ward, Michael’s and Acosta. She currently shares her time and talents as Proctor & Gamble liaison to large retail stores in the region.
Outside of work Jo Marie is a member of the Morongo Basin Historical Society and Landers Community Association, where she volunteers with their thrift shop and disaster relief program. At home she’s experimenting with low-water-use irrigation methods for California desert plants.
As a Board member, JoMarie urges community members to get involved in water issues facing the region and how these impact water rates. She aims to help the agency foster an environment where anyone feels comfortable asking questions and sharing their views. She encourages community members to attend the meetings and to get to know her in person.
